Self Diagnosis
So apparently itâs time for another self dx info post because people are gross
INFO:
basics
- self diagnosis isnât looking at one post and going âhey thats me, im autisticâ
- self diagnosis includes research and introspection
- self diagnosis of multiple disorders is reasonable – comorbidity is common (see: autism and ADHD, ADHD and SPD, many personality disorders with each other, though more than one is rarely diagnosed due to overlapping traits)
- self diagnosis doesnât take away resources from anyone
- the only people who donât take a disorder seriously âbecause ofâ self diagnosis donât take it seriously anyway
- the DSM is available online
- it doesnât matter if theyâre wrong – if theyâre self diagnosing itâs because they had a problem and the resources and coping mechanisms within ____ community helped them.Â
re: doctors
- many doctors refuse to diagnose
- a lot of these reasons are racism and sexism
- some traits/symptoms are internal and are therefore not seen by doctors
- doctors diagnose based on behavior. people self-dx based on.. behavior.
re: racism, classism, sexism
- many poc (especially black people) are diagnosed with âbeing {race}â
- many people who are perceived as girls wonât be diagnosed because {sexist reason such as âgirls cant get autismâ – yes thats a real reason people have been denied diagnosis}
- going to a professional is expensive. it doesnât matter if you were âobviously _____â or not – itâs expensive.
Hey, You Might Be Autistic.
Okay, deep breaths. I know this is hard for you if youâve always considered yourself neurotypical.
You might be thinking of the âAutistic screechingâ jokes, that youâve heard them used, that youâve used them yourself.
You might be thinking âbut Iâm smart/social/normal!â
Itâs okay. Unpack your defensiveness.
ESPECIALLY if youâre AFAB (assigned female at birth). So many Autistic AFAB people are never diagnosed, and Iâm going to try to make sure youâre not one of them.
– If you are often âin fandomsâ and you have hyperfixations with them – whether they change or not – that could be a Special Interest (SpIn for short), a term for an Autistic personâs fixation.
– If you consider yourself âsmart but lazyâ – Autistic people tend to be âsmarterâ than most neurotypicals, but often lack energy. This is sometimes dismissed as âa gifted person who just isnât tryingâ.
– If you have âresting bitch faceâ, remember that Autistic people usually donât express emotion in their face or body language, so it could be one of the key signs for Autism.
– If you are âsensitive towards light/sound/temperatureâ and often find yourself âoverreactingâ (and feel childish / have people tell you that youâre childish because of it), you could be experiencing sensory overload.
– If you âenjoy fidgetingâ or just really like good smells/tastes/textures beyond normalcy, you could be stimming, which is extremely common in both people with ADHD and Autism.
– If you are âemotional because of other peopleâs feelingsâ or âunempathetic/unemotional when it comes to other peopleâ, you could be experiencing hyperempathy/hypoempathy, especially if you tend to fluctuate between the two. Remember that being hypoempathetic doesnât make you a bad person: you can still experience compassion/sympathy like anybody else!
– If you consider yourself âweirdâ, remember that Autistic minds work differently than Allistic minds, and that this could mean that youâre not just âquirky/odd/unusualâ, youâre Autistic.
Donât panic, the Autistic community is beautiful and a lovely place to be in. And remember that self-diagnosis is 100% okay, good, and valid.
Everybody can reblog this, whether you are Autistic or Allistic/neurotypical â¤ď¸
EDIT: Iâm just putting it here so I donât have to tell you all individually, do more research before self-diagnosing. Look at professional websites (especially Autistic-run websites) and blogs by Autistic people, even the #actuallyautistic tag on Tumblr.
Donât take my word as the final truth, many neurotypical people fit this criteria.
Feel free to DM me if you have questions đ
