PLEASE HELP/BOOST

pictured above is a severly neglected turtle at one of the preschools I work at. I’ve been given free reign to fix up the tank with proper filtration/lighting/etc (at least to the best of my ability given the tank is too small to begin with) but it has to be out of my own pocket and turtle supplies are expensive!

For a good filter and large decor/platforms I’m probably looking at $200 in expenses, and at least $350 if I can convince the director to let me get a bigger tank.

If you can donate to help my paypal and squarecash and both /telkhine, or you if you’d rather you can send me a petco gifrcard via email to libero.h161@gmail.com, but cash will let me buy from smaller stores or craigslist.

@amazingpetenclosures maybe your community can help?

I definitely don’t mind boosting, it would be good to see this little guy getting some much needed improvements 🙂

@butch-telkhine
I’m guessing you’re in the US? Try craigslist and sites like that for used supplies! As far as bigger enclosures go, you could get a rubbermaid/sterillite tub or even a fish pond that is far larger than that tank for a lot cheaper than a glass tank of equivalent size. You might also want to look into pond filters and heaters, they might be more efficient or cheaper than fish tank ones? I’m not sure about that, but check your local hardware stores before dropping the money at a pet store.

Agreed, your most expensive supplies should be your lighting. For resources, I recommend this site X.

You can buy a large storage bin for $20 or so, and that will be your cheapest option UNLESS someone local is selling a large glass tank. These will typically be cheap but if the tank is large (75+) the seller might ask for $100 or more. But, sometimes you get lucky. Definitely check around on craigslist or facebook or equivalent site that has selling section. Oh! Also look for water troughs or hard pond liners (like the one linked above). They sit above ground but are cheaper than glass tanks of the same volume. Aim for something at LEAST 50 gallons for now. I can’t tell for sure from the angle but this might be a female and she’ll need a ~125 gallon enclosure as an adult. Definitely uh… worth mentioning to your teacher.

A water heater is probably unnecessary, unless the classroom gets very cold. Your first priority is proper lighting and diet, then water quality and enclosure size.

A fluorescent UVB light can fit into a normal aquarium fixture, if you can find a used one (ask around if people might have old aquarium supplies lying around, or look online) that would be cheaper but even just a fixture is about $35-$40 or so. The heat looks like it’s already taken care of.

For your dock, one time I had to use two glass vases stacked on top of each other for my turtle until I got a “proper” dock. Worked fine. Just two large rectangular vases stacked up tall and his old dock (which no longer has it’s suction cups) on top so he could get traction. The basking area does not have to be commercially made, or even high-end. You could always get this one.

As far as filtration goes, if he/she is stuck in this tank for a while then really try to get a nice but small canister filter. (Zoo Med makes decent cheaper ones) and do water changes twice a week or more. It’s a lot, and if you can’t manage that then any water changes are better than none at all.

Anyway, good luck with the little guy and I hope things go well!
