The trend with fandoms nowadays seems to be:

– Praise the living daylights out of a show and shove its greatness in everyone’s face

– 2 years later, pick it apart violently and insult everyone who still enjoys it in as edgy a way as possible because negativity is cool

!!!

uhh maybe marginalized ppl were excited at the possibility of a show (such as su) representing them, only to be rightfully angry when the show ends up racist, homophobic etc. anyway, super bad post all around

I feel like a lot of hardcore accusations of problematic and offensive content that get thrown at media that was previously lauded as progressive come from a few sources; first, the creators are often a lot more accessible than the creators of mainstream media. you can message rebecca sugar on twitter personally to call her a racist bitch, but you can’t do the same to, say, jj abrhams or another large-scale creator. likewise, you can’t stand on a streetcorner and scream at people until they agree to stop watching law and order, but you can certainly bully large groups of people online until they stop supporting an independent creator.

second, the fandoms that tend to form around progressive media tend to be younger, more volatile, looking to media and fandom as forms of activism. mainstream media they can write off as garbage, but progressive niche media that makes a sincere attempt to represent marginalized folks must be Absolutely Perfect. the idea that a piece of media can have good parts and bad parts, that it can try and only partially succeed, but that that partial success is still worth something, is completely lost on many young fans. either its irredeemable garbage or its the literal messiah, there’s no in-between. so if a show falls short of perfect, as is inevitable, then it goes straight into the “total garbage” pile and must be condemned by the masses.

genuinely trying to represent certain groups and making a few missteps is not the same thing as being ignorant or malicious. making a sincere effort to mean something to folks who don’t get a lot of things made for them is something to be proud of. would you rather go back to the times when fucking nothing got made for us? when the only characters we saw that we could relate to were only there to be made fun of? you’re spoiled by a rush of new creators who took “go make your own thing then” to heart and set out to make content for people like them, you have the gall to look at what they’re trying to do and spit on it for not being better. no creator owes you shit, no creator has to bow to a bunch of teenage bullies who do nothing but demand and harass, that’s all there is to it.

Dear lord can everyone please read this post because it’s so relevant

Article 13 has been approved by EU. It’s worse than Net Neutrality has ever been. I don’t even know if we will have any access to Tumblr, Pinterest, Ao3 or even Instagram. Memes are probably dead, just like reactions, fanfictions and gifsets. Everyone in EU is in danger that they will not have access to their favorite sites. But I haven’t seen a SINGLE post about it on my dash because Americans doesn’t give a damn.

Also, I’m in Europe and ngl, had no idea this was even an article up for debate let alone it being fucking passed.

Don’t panic! This was expected at this stage and it is only the beginning. If you are a European and feel passionate about this, please keep on reading and help!

So what has happened so far … the Commission has drafted up a long overdue copyright reform. https://eur-lex.europa.eu/procedure/EN/2016_280 It contains a lot of good, and some bad: mainly Article 11 and 13.

This was put forward as a whole to the European Parlament, where it was voted down on the 5th of July 2018

This meant, this will not go through the fast way, and will be subject to scrutiny and change.

The Commission made some alterations https://eur-lex.europa.eu/procedure/EN/2016_280 and put it forward again. If Parlament would have voted it down again, it probably would have meant back to the drawing board, but most people (including me) agree that Europe does need copyright reform, so on the second vote it passed the first step:

So what happens now?

This will now go into what is called the Trilogue, where Commission, Parlament and representatives of all national governments will sit together to make alterations until everybody is happy implementing the regulation.

This means we can now influence this via our MEPs and our National Government!

In countries that are red your government is likely to support Article 13.

What to do now?

There are a lot of organisations that organise actions against article 13. Check out their websites and get in touch with your MEP or local government and let them know you are unhappy about this.

… and many many more, just google to find one in your country.

Also, as @asthesea-breezehitsmylungs pointed out, a lot of people are not aware of this going on. So make them aware! Share the memes and point them to the petitions. And don’t just complain how shit this is, get in touch with your politicians!

Oh good.

Yo, everyone, EU or not, please at least signal boost this shit. I’ve said it before and I will say it again: those two articles will suck majorly for all of us.

Like dude, how much time do you spend enjoying various things that relate to, Idk, your favourite show or book series. It’ll probs be gone. Funny memes and shit? Nah our generation doesn’t fucking need to laugh, it’s not like half of us are already depressed or anything. And so many other things that are cool about the internet, I’m not even gonna mention how some big, cool places like YouTube and Tumblr will be fucked by this.

So seriously, there’s only so much a small bunch of people can do. We need some noise on this. As much as I hate to admit it, some things require some fat numbres to be paid attention to. So even if you’re not planning on taking any action yourself, the best thing to do would be to spread this to everyone you trust to either get involved or pay it forward like you did.

And seriously, every little thing helps, ok? We should have a say in how the laws that deeply affect us are made.

SIGNAL BOOST

Signal boost again to all EU peeps. Keep pushing your MEPS.

I know this issort of awful but i was panicking and didnt know what else to do. We went to our state fair and they, of course, had one of those “get a ball in a bowl win a goldfish’ things. I filed a complaint with the fair grounds and the event for allowing things like that. And we ended up snagging this kid. Hes breathing…okay ish? But his fins are clamped in a serious way. I have him in one of those awful carriers with a tiny bit of salt and a spare bubbler.
I feel awful about having him in there but i didnt know what else to do, and i wasnt about to just let him die in that nasty cooler.
If i can get him back to at least semi decent health, my mum in law will take him for her goldfish tank ((its a 150 gal with 2 fancy goldfish in it rn.))
Any advice or help i can get i would apreciate so much. Ive never personaly kept goldfish so im not even sure where to start…

Hey! So we’re two good ol’ Jewish gay people who are disabled, penniless, and stuck in a filthy apartment complex with a roach problem. I’m on the left, my fiance @watsonarchetype is on the right.

A little under a year ago, my mother kicked us out of my family home. She left nothing of my recently deceased fathers’ money to me, despite knowing I would struggle. You may have seen us around before talking about this same situation; there’s a post from a few months ago where we’re asking for help with the same issue, but the longer these things are around, the slower things get.

Both of us are disabled and while I have been able to work a part-time retail job, it has mentally and physically taken a severe toll on me. Both of us are in constant pain of varying degrees; with my fiance’s declining mobility, the flight of stairs up to our apartment is becoming a serious problem.

I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and cannot currently afford my medications, the cost of gas to get to and from doctor’s appointments, or even the cost of gas to get to work.

We have not been able to grocery shop in several months. We are required to choose between paying rent and eating food.

We can’t afford our rent if we plan on continuing to live. Our only chance is to move out, and we desperately need help to fund that.

The apartment complex has a systemic roach problem. The contracted pest control company has been unable to eradicate them because they live in the walls. There are sexual predators living very close to us who have threatened us more than once. Management is only sporadically available and has zero interest in the quality of life of their tenants. (More on the garbage apartment here.) We have no outside help and cannot seem to raise the money to get out of this place. The situation is becoming desperate.

hey guys we’ve managed to pay rent this month but we’ve been left with almost nothing for stuff like food & gas. we’re not sure how we’re going to recover from the combined cost of rent + medical bills this month. please please help if you can

thank you so much for enjoying our content & sticking by us through this difficult time. we adore you. ❤ stay safe and please share or donate if you can!
