Food insecurity traumatizes people. Yes, even the “minor” kind where they survive it.

Have you ever been hungry? Really hungry, the kind where the sensation of hunger itself fades and your thinking slows and you realize with a detached sort of horror that this means that you are dying?

Have you ever tried to arrange to go to a friend’s house for “dinner” (that is your only meal of the day), or pretended to have forgotten your lunch when the truth is there was nothing in the refrigerator? Have you ever eaten spoiled food because it looked so good you couldn’t resist?

Have you–not been hungry, exactly–but not known where your next meal was going to come from? Have you counted calories because you know in an abstract sense that also feels very viscerally real that if you don’t get enough of them you die?

Have you been forced to choose between eating for yourself and giving enough food to your young children that they can sleep through the night? Have you been pregnant and hungry and had anxiety attacks, wondering if you’ll lose the baby to malnutrition?

Have you, for that matter, tried to study while hungry? Tried to work while hungry? Tried to sleep while hungry yourself?

You don’t have the first idea what hunger actually does to people before it kills them.
