Last update on my betta. Altier died before i even went to sleep last night. He passed some where between 12 and 1 am. My wife checked on him before she came to bed and let me know he was gone. I’ll be burying him tonight with my other fish Clotho.

i-want-more-fish:

Altier’s first salt bath. He was in for maybe 5 min because i panicked when he started floating weird. He’s now in a makeshift hospital tank in one of those ‘betta carrier’ things (I got it second hand to grow aquatic plants in but i guess he needed it more rn.)
He’s resting on a fake plant close to the surface, breathing hard.
I’m so scared. I feel like I’m just sitting here watching him die. I want him to be okay…my chest hurts so much.
This is the fish you guys. The fish that got me into the hobby. The fish that showed me how to care about aquatic animals. He was the gateway to a special interest and lots of little swimming friends. I’ve barely had him 7 ish months. How can he be dying already.
I thought he’d live forever but this is a big slap in the face with reality.
I honestly don’t think he’s going to make it through the night.

Update on Altier if any one but me actually cares.

My rats need vet help asap

dogour:

A few years ago, I got my rat Amethyst from a reptile show. She was tiny, and just barely old enough to be able to eat solid food. Despite being bred to be snake food, she is extremely sweet and will give kisses to anyone and everyone.
I got Eileen from someone who posted a local ad. I picked her from a bucket of other rats. She is sweet but very shy and timid.
Recently, my two rats Ameythst and Eileen’s health has been going down hill. Amethyst is almost three years old and has two mammay tumors. And they are growing quickly. They have started to affect her mobility. She falls down a lot. She doesn’t climb and run around like she used to.
My other rat Eileen is two years old and has stared to bleed from her vagina, which unlike human females, is not normal for a rat. She likely either has an infection or a tumor.
I’m hoping to raise enough money to take both of them to the vet and get them the health care they need. The visit itself will cost $49 per rat. I might be able to cover that myself. But I’m unsure of what the cost of everything else will be.
I’d like to be able to take them to the vet as soon as possible, as I really don’t know how much time they have left.
Even though they’ve only been with me for a couple of years, it feels like they’ve been with me forever. I just want the best for them.

Please help me. I don’t want them to have to suffer. Most of my money goes to bills, so I don’t get much left over. And like I said, I think I can get the money together for the vet visit itself, but I don’t think I can cover the treatments.
And if you can’t donate, I understand. Just please share this.

FISH RANT AHEAD:
Im worried ab2ot my gourami fish so im browsing fb sales for a decent sized fish tank i can move him to. And i found a ton if ‘betta bowls’ and betta ‘habitats’ and ‘plant feeder betta bowls’.
IF YOU BUY A TANK THAT SAYS ITS FOR BETTAS AT WALMART, PETSMART, OR PETCO, OR ANY OTHER CHAIN PET STORE HERE IS YOUR PSA

Its a lie. Bettas cannot live off plant roots. Bettas cannot live in half gallon bowls. Bettas cannot live in the cup you bought them in.

If youre going to take RESPONSIBILITY for an animal, regardless of the type of animal, do your research.
Bettas in a good enviornment can live up to 5 years. Put one the wrong enviornment they can die in hours.
I dint know every thing. Im not a fish expert. But my betta is vibrant and happy and active in a 10 gallon tank, with danios as tank mates, and i can promise you i will be working my ass off for him to make it to 5 years.

Ive heard of bettas flourishing in 2.5 gallon tanks, but if your betta is in a tank smaller than that, or in a bowl at all with out a filter, fix it. Now. If you wouldn’t keep your dog/cat in a tiny kennel its entire life, why would you do that to a fish.

Did you make a mistake with your fish?
Take a deep breath. It’s okay. We all make mistakes.
You are not a bad owner.
You are learning.
If you’re not sure, ask for advice! I know I personally love seeing all the fish on here and if anyone needs help, my ask is always open.
Making a mistake doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have fish, it means that you can learn something and move on.
You can do this. It’s okay. I believe in you.

I really needed this right now…
As few of you know I’ve started keeping fish for the first time in my adult life. It stated with a rescue mission of a red and white betta that was labeled ‘king crown male’ at a walmart. He was I bad shape and my wife was really upstart over him so we rushed astound to get the equipment we needed. He seemed to blossom in a 5 gallon planted tank, but only lived a week and a half at most. So that’s fish number one.
Fish numbers 2-6 that i lost were danios we’d gotten to be tank mates for our new betta (dumbo half moon male) I’d gotten 2 types of danios, all the striped ones died first. Then 3 golden. And now i have a single surviving golden danio who seems to be best buddies with Altier the betta.
I’ve never lost pets before and was devastated. And i felt stupid because they were just fish. But i cared a lot.
